In this story
Camping can feel intimidating if you’ve never done it, but most of the hard work happens before you leave home. A good checklist turns a stressful packing session into a simple routine.
Shelter and sleep
- Tent, poles and pegs (practise pitching it at home)
- Sleeping bag rated for the night-time temperature
- Sleeping mat or inflatable pad
- Pillow or a stuff sack filled with clothes
Kitchen
- Stove, fuel and a lighter
- One pot, one pan, utensils
- Simple meals planned in advance
- Water container and washing-up kit
Comfort and safety
Pack a head torch, warm layers, rain gear and a basic first-aid kit. Check the weather the day before and choose a campsite with facilities for your first trip.
The first night is always the strangest. By the second morning, with coffee on the stove and birds overhead, you’ll understand why people love it.

This is exactly the nudge I needed. Trying it this weekend!
