Most of us don’t decide to spend hours on our phones. It happens a few minutes at a time, prompted by buzzes and red badges. The fix isn’t throwing the phone away; it is redesigning how it asks for your attention.
Seven changes worth making
- Turn off every notification that doesn’t come from a real person.
- Move social and video apps off the home screen.
- Use grayscale mode in the evening.
- Charge your phone outside the bedroom.
- Set a daily limit for your two most-used apps.
- Batch messages: reply three times a day, not thirty.
- Keep a paper notebook for the ideas you’d otherwise type.
Measure, then adjust
Check your weekly screen time before you start and again after two weeks. The numbers are usually surprising, and seeing the drop is motivating.
Your phone should work for you, not the other way round.
