In this story
A day hike is one of the cheapest adventures available, but a little planning separates a great day from a long, damp one. The goal is simple: come home tired, happy and wanting to go again.
Choose a trail you can finish
For a first outing, pick a loop of eight to twelve kilometres with modest climbing. Read recent trip reports, check how long others took and add an hour for photos and rests.
The ten things worth carrying
- Water, more than you think you need
- Snacks with salt and sugar
- A light waterproof layer
- A warm layer, even in summer
- A charged phone and an offline map
- Sun protection
- A small first-aid kit
- A head torch
- A whistle
- A bag for your rubbish
Pace yourself
Start slower than feels natural. If you can’t hold a conversation while climbing, ease off. Short, regular breaks beat one long stop where your legs go cold.
Finally, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back. It costs nothing and is the most important safety step of all.

Saved this for later. Really well written.
I’ve been doing this for a month and it really works.
Love the practical list. Thank you for sharing!
